Moraito Chico
Spanish guitarist Moraito plays pure, unadulterated flamenco, free of the new age influences that have crept into the most popular (at least on American shores) recent exponents of the style. Moraito was born Manuel Moreno Junquera in 1956 in the Santiago district of Jerez de la Frontera, a town in the Andalusian region; his family was already renowned for its musical ability, and his uncle Manuel Morao was one of the finest flamenco guitarists the town had ever produced. Naturally, Moraito began following in his footsteps at a young age, making his public performance debut at age 11 at a festival helmed by his uncle.
Maraíto was born in 1955 in one of the extended gypsy families from Jerez. He learned the guitar by listening to his father and uncle Juan Manuel Morao Morao, who played with the deceased Terremoto. Moraíto Chico made his debut as a 11 year old (1966) on the annual festival of Jerez, where he played among the well-known names among the flamenco. He won the guitar that Manolo Sanlúcar had made available.
Listening and playing during the juerga's (parties) in the corrales (patios where a number of homes come on out) he learned the playful flamencostyle of his own family and the neighbors. Listening to the records, he became familiar with the styles of Melchor de Marchena, Habichuela, Sabícas. During his life he listened, learned, changed and developed his music into its own distinctive style.
He made his professional debut with La Paquera de Jerez. Her regular guitarist Parrilla de Jerez, an idol of Moraíto, was sick and La Paquera sought someone who could and would accompany her on a tour. In 1984 he received the Copa de Jerez, a prestigious prize awarded by the Cátedra Flamencología. (Chair for Flamencology) He had meanwhile built a career in Barcelona and Madrid's Tablao. He works mainly as a guitarist together with Jose Merce. More flamenco guitarists .
